Supportive of Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Students |
Brain Breaks are supportive of Learners with Disabilities by creating an inclusive environment where all students are encouraged to participate. An example of a Brain Break that is supportive is Jack Hartman's song, See it, Say it, Sign it. This song promotes the acceptance and inclusion of students who use ASL to communicate with their peers. Dance moves can also be modified for students who may have physical impairments or disabilities.
|
Brain Breaks are also supportive of Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Students by introducing students to other languages besides their primary language. An example of a Brain Break is Jack Hartmans' two songs Tooty Ta and Tooty Ta en Español. Students who are familiar with the English version, can be engaged in the Spanish version. By not only sharing English songs with students, students who may speak other languages will feel represented.

Connection to College Learning
In SPED 441, at Towson University, each student is required to share a mind-body connection with the class, either in the form of a mindfulness activity or a Brain Break. Many students chose to share a Brain Break in the form of a video or song. Just Dance has many videos that students can dance and sing to. Just Dance provides more popular music. On the other hand, GoNoodle provides silly songs. Jack Hartman provides less silly, educational songs. Specific examples of Brain Breaks are shown below. We also are providing a link to two Brain Break playlists we created.

Educational Brain BreaksThink Like A Scientist, a video provided by GoNoodle and written by Blazer Fresh, is shown above. This educational Brain Break encourages movement through dance while reinforcing proper science experimental steps. This song can be used as an intro to a lesson, a break during a lesson, or a conclusion after a lesson. Auditory learners can especially benefit through the use of silly songs as educational Brain Breaks. By putting information to a tune, students may be able to recall the information easily. We will incorporate educational Brain Breaks into our future classroom. We have incorporated this particular GoNoodle song into a science lesson at our student teaching site. Students responded well to the use of Brain Breaks and were very engaged, singing along and dancing with the people in the video.

Brain BreaksOne example of a Brain Break is shown above. This video, provided by GoNoodle, is called Milkshake by Koo Koo Kanga Roo. This Brain Break engages students both vocally and physically through silly song. Students who struggle with sitting for a long time, struggle with focusing, or get frustrated during instructional time can benefit from the use of Brain Breaks. As the name suggests, it allows students to have a break from instruction. Breaks can be provided at any time deemed appropriate by the educator. We would incorporate Brain Breaks into our future classrooms. In fact, we have already incorporated some GoNoodle Brain Breaks into our student teaching placements and lessons.
