An OverviewMcGraw Hill Education's website allows students to access virtual math manipulatives from anywhere. The purpose of this resource is provide students with manipulatives to enable them for the most success in mathematics. The site is composed of drop down menus providing work mats and manipulatives. Work mats include, but are not limited to, tens frames, hundreds charts, grids, and number lines. Manipulatives include, but are not limited to, pattern blocks, base ten blocks, colored counters, dice, thermometers, and spinners. The site makes these manipulatives readily available as long as a student has a computer with internet access and Adobe flash. The site is for all grades, but has an option to narrow down the grade level. Math manipulatives aid students in developing a conceptual understanding. This site aids teachers by enabling every student to have access to the manipulatives. There is less preparation on the teachers side and no items can be lost. We found that all strategies are useful to students. However, the one manipulative that we have seen used the most frequently is base ten blocks. Place value is difficult concept for students to grasp. With this site, students can:

Connection to College Learning
Within SPED 441, at TU, we discussed and read about many different strategies to aid students. We were required to develop a Learning Strategies Binder. We had to include two strategies for mathematics. Many students within the class included various forms of manipulatives as a learning strategy. In SPED 441, we also had to teach a lesson as a demonstration. Many of the math lessons included manipulatives as well. Manipulatives can help both visual learners and kinesthetic learners. One way to differentiate math instruction is to provide manipulatives so that students can see an alternative way to model their understanding of various mathematic concepts.

Manipulatives provide Learners with Disabilities an additional way to explore the given math concept. This website is an online instructional support. Base ten blocks aid students in visually seeing the exchange of ten cubes as one stick (or ten ones to one ten). Tens frames help students to see how a ten is made.

Students whose primary language is not English may not be able to effectively communicate that they understand the content. Manipulatives provide these students with the ability to communicate that they can perform the given task or answer the given problem.
