Dreambox is a tool that adapts to each individual learner to assess and close educational gaps in mathematics. The material provided by DreamBox is math games and live progress monitoring for educators to evaluate the students. The math games progress as the student progresses in math content. Games are provided for grades prekindergarten to 8th grade. Playing a math game is much more exciting than completing a math worksheet.
Connection to College Learning
In SPED 441, we learned about Response to Intervention, which DreamBox uses. Response to Intervention is a framework that utilizes key instructional strategies and ongoing progress monitoring designed to bring students to the current grade level. There are tiers that RTI goes by. Tier One is basic support in general education. Tier Two is targeted instruction for students one grade level behind. This tier is often delivered as small group instruction. Tier Three is intensive, often individualized instruction for students that are more than one grade level behind. By using formative data, it is able to address students' struggles while learning. Formative data provides teachers with current progress so they can help students through instruction.
With solid classroom instruction and access to DreamBox as
additional support, students made huge gains in mathematical
understanding. That's when I realized the power of quality
instruction with quality digital tools can enhance and expand
instructional opportunities.

Every subscription to DreamBox includes an English and Spanish version of the games. This enables students to learn in their primary language if it is Spanish. Allowing students to complete activities in a language they are knowledgeable of and comfortable with enables them to succeed. DreamBox will not let a student move until they have mastered the content within the game. For those who may be behind, they are still able to get instruction with their peers. Utilizing Dreambox allows struggling students to reinforce understanding and develop mastery of the skills which are challenging for them. The game shown to the left is called Placing Fractions on a Number Line. We found this game as one of the useful games provided. Understanding that 11/22 and 32/64 are both equivalent to 1/2 is a difficult concept. Additionally, understanding that 1/3 is less than 1/2 is difficult as well. This game requires students to place fractions on a number line to demonstrate their understanding of fractions.
